O'Neil was in high-school when she auditioned in 2005 for the 3rd Canadian Idol season. The judges loved her voice and she made it to the Top 100 round. O'Neil was praised highly by her judges. She experienced significant defeats during the top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals, when she was put into the bottom three and bottom two, respectively. This shocked the judges, and they advised that the public choose Melissa who was the contestant with the best ability to sing. O'Neil's performances were so good that she didn't even make it to the third place again. With two other stunning performances on September 7, 2005, the day that O'Neil along with Rex Goudie made it to the final two contestants, the judge Werner said that newspapers in the early morning will read: O'Neil beat Goudie in order to be the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and the youngest winner of the show's time . O'Neil received a phone call right away from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
